Liquid crystals are capable of forming different mesophases stable in a certain temperature range.  The detection of these mesophases and their transitions requires a DSC with a very good resolution (short time constant) and an extremely small noise level.  The sample has been heated to 155C (top curve) and cooled down subsequently (bottom curve).  The mesophase transitions are clearly visible by zooming the cooling curve even though the enthalpy changes and the temperature range are quite small.
