The cost of instrumentation and skill level required is much lower than XRPD making this technique useful for QC laboratories.

Scanning calorimeters and microcalorimeters can be used to detect formation of amorphous material.  Since large samples can be used with microcalorimeters (up to 10g) it is often possible to detect below 1 wt% amorphous.
